The Society for the Study of American Women Writers announces the next event in our series SSAWW Reads: Chats with Authors about Their New Books, featuring Kimberly Blockett and Shirley Moody-Turner talking with Joycelyn Moody about two new titles, focusing on what they can tell us about American women writers.

What forces have attempted to erase Black women’s writings and literary histories? How have individuals and communities worked to counteract those influences? What are the challenges and rewards of editorial work that seeks to (re)introduce nineteenth- and twentieth-century Black women intellectuals to contemporary audiences? Join Kimberly Blockett and Shirley Moody-Turner, in conversation with Joycelyn Moody, as they address these questions and discuss how their new books engage with the complicated relationships between intersectional identities, respectability, and the politics of print.

Kimberly Blockett, Chair and Professor of Africana Studies at University of Delaware, will be discussing Memoirs of the Life, Religious Experience, Ministerial Travels, and Labours of Mrs. Elaw (2021).

Shirley Moody-Turner, Associate Professor of English and African American Studies at Pennsylvania State University, will be discussing The Portable Anna Julia Cooper (2022).

Joycelyn Moody, the Sue E. Denman Distinguished Chair in American Literature at the University of Texas at San Antonio, will moderate the discussion.
