The Constance Fenimore Woolson Society is happy to announce its Fifteenth Biennial Conference:

Going Global: From Cleveland to the World

April 3-6, 2025

Glidden House

Case Western Reserve University

Cleveland, Ohio

With a new collection of scholarly essays, Secret Histories: A New Era in Constance Fenimore Woolson Studies, forthcoming from the University of Georgia Press, and continuing plaudits for the Library of America’s Woolson: Collected Stories, Anne Boyd Rioux’s Portrait of a Lady Novelist, and Sharon L. Dean’s Collected Letters, the peripatetic Woolson has finally found her home in American literary history. Her movements from Cleveland to Florida to England, Italy, and the Mediterranean Rim have often made her difficult to place, but in the twenty-first century her geographical mobility has increasing relevance.

With Cleveland as our setting and the Cuyahoga Valley as our backdrop, we especially invite papers on Woolson’s attention to the Lake Country in particular and her writings on travel and the environment more broadly. As always, we also welcome papers on any topic related to Woolson’s life and work, as well as the life and work of her contemporaries. Feel free to extend consideration to other Great Lakes writers, to the reception of her writings, or to the pleasures of being a Woolson scholar.

Constance Fenimore Woolson Society conferences are open to all.  Membership in the society is not a requirement, and proposals from graduate students and junior faculty are encouraged. Several travel awards to junior colleagues will be made. Please send all queries and informal proposals (up to 250 words, plus a brief bio) to the current president, Dr. Katherine Swett, at swettkatherine@gmail.com. Thanks for placing “Woolson Conference 2025” in the subject line.

Deadline: November 22, 2024.
