SSAWW Frances E.W. Harper 200th Anniversary Mural Tour
Sign-up Required (limited to 30 participants)
Cost: $25
This short walking tour will allow SSAWW conference goers to visit a brand new mural of novelist, poet, activist, and orator, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper which sits alongside a mural of Philadelphia poet, Ursula Rucker, this year’s SSAWW keynote speaker. Participants will be guided through the historic and contemporary Black communities of Germantown (about a 30-minute drive from the Conference hotel). We’ll discuss Harper’s contributions to the arts and to other Black women activists who are represented in the mural. In this 200th anniversary year of her birth, registrants will learn about the digital, curricular, and arts-based resources created to help commemorate Harper’s legacy. This mural, which will have been unveiled October 30, was produced by Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Center for Black Digital Research/#DigBlk. The tour will be guided by the Center’s director and SSAWW member, Dr. Gabrielle Foreman, Mural Art Philadelphia’s Donnell Powell, and Dr. Brandi Locke, Arts Coordinator for #DigBlk. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring an umbrella if light rain is in the forecast. We will be leaving directly after the Harper panel in Ballroom D at 3:15 p.m. and calling Lyfts together from the front of The Philadelphia Marriott Old City. We plan to arrive back at the Conference hotel by 5:30 for the Reception. The cost of the tour is $25 (not including transportation), and registration is limited to 30 participants.
